The “firsts” can feel like fresh grief.
The first birthday.
The first holiday.
The first wedding you attend without them.
The first time you get sick and there’s no one to comfort you the same way.
The firsts are hard because they confirm what you already know:
life has changed.
If you’re facing a first, it helps to prepare gently and intentionally.
Gentle Ways to Prepare for a “First”
You don’t have to be strong — you just need support.
- Plan simple support
- A friend, family member, or church connection
- Give yourself permission to change traditions
- You do not have to do things the same way as before
- Build in an exit plan
- Leave early if you need to
- Do one honoring act
- Light a candle, write a note, say a prayer, visit a meaningful place
- Reduce pressure
- The goal is not perfection — it’s presence
Also remember: the first time is often the hardest.
That doesn’t mean the next ones won’t hurt —
but many widows find the sharp shock softens over time.
God will not abandon you in the firsts.
He will carry you through them.
Psalm 23:4 — “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Reflection Questions
- What “first” am I facing right now?
- What practical support can I put in place?
- What is one honoring act I want to include?
Prayer
Father, I’m facing a hard “first.” Please go with me. Give me strength, calm my heart, and help me feel Your presence in the middle of it. Amen.
With hope,
Joan
